Avakas Gorge Nature Trail
- Paphos
- Nature trail
In the westernmost part of Cyprus, in Paphos district, is located a short nature trail ideal for all levels of hikers. Avakas Gorge is situated within Peyia Forest, in Akamas Peninsula, and combines beauty and adventure.
It is a linear trail of 1.2km and its starting point is situated at the road of Agios Georgios (Saint George) Peyias and Lara beach, at the specially designed location, with a parking area for the visitors. The trail starts at an open valley with natural vegetation and it follows a route alongside Avgas river, leading towards the gorge. The entrance of the gorge has an altitude of 45m and it reaches up to 150m at the end. The difficulty level of the trail is 2, since there are river-crossing points, where the water flows throughout the year, making the route slippery. The trail ends up in the vineyards of Arodes village.
The area is characterized by sculpted rock formations, and the gorge is one of the deepest and narrowest limestone canyons on the island. The trail also provides excellent opportunities to enjoy a variety of native plants and the unique flora and fauna of the area. A perfect combination that makes Avakas Gorge a favourite spot for hikers, outdoor enthusiasts but also photographers.
