Nicosia

Nicosia district is the largest in administrative area and occupies the central part of the island, bordering with all the other five districts. Nicosia city, known as “Ledra” (Λήδρα) in the antiquity, is nowadays the urban centre and the capital of the island, with its historical centre surrounded by the Venetian Walls, and divided after the Turkish invasion of 1974.

The city houses important museums, such as the Cyprus Archaeological Museum and Leventis Municipal Museum. The rural area of the district is dotted with traditional villages, with stone houses and cobblestone alleys, such as Fikardou, Kalopanagiotis and Kakopetria.
