Vouni Panayia Winery

Founded in 1987, Vouni Panayia Winery holds a rich legacy of cultivating family vineyards with utmost passion, care, and respect for the exceptional viticultural character of the region. Blending tradition with innovation, experience with knowledge, the team at Vouni Panayia strives to create quality wines from meticulously selected grapes of indigenous varieties, nurtured in the winery's own vineyards, each carrying the distinctive characteristics of the area.

Situated in Panayia village, within the Paphos District, the winery finds itself nestled approximately 1,000 meters above sea level, surrounded by a picturesque pine forest beneath the Troodos mountains. The Mediterranean climate, featuring mild winters and temperate summers, cooled by the Troodos mountain peaks, provides an ideal environment for vine growth. Notably, Vouni Panayia boasts a rare distinction within Europe, as the Cypriot vineyard remains untouched by the insect phylloxera, allowing the vines to be planted on their original roots, without using the American rootstock. The soil, predominantly composed of clay to gypsum-clay, further contributes to the unique terroir.

Distinguished among wineries in Cyprus, Vouni Panayia exclusively produces dry wines from indigenous varieties. A prominent example is the Alina, a 100% Xynisteri wine from 70-year-old bush vines, delivering pristine aromas of pineapple, peach, and beeswax. On the palate, the wine exhibits medium-bodied finesse, characterized by exotic fruits culminating in a lively citrus-tinged finish, complemented by a touch of honey.

Emphasizing the native grape Maratheftiko, known for its deep color, high tannins, and red fruit and spice aromas, Vouni Panayia's Maratheftiko stands as a single varietal wine. The wine showcases a complex nose, featuring ripe red fruit, spices, and vanilla notes derived from oak aging. The palate boasts a full-bodied structure with firm tannins, culminating in a long, satisfying finish.

A visit to Vouni Panayia Winery offers a captivating journey through the history of Cyprus wine, inviting visitors to discover the essence of Cyprus wine and viticulture. The winery's traditional museum and charming tasting room present a delightful opportunity to savor the winery's diverse labels.

Vouni Panayia's dedication to highlighting Cyprus's indigenous varieties and its unique terroir has earned it a treasured reputation among wine enthusiasts. Beyond being a mere wine tasting, a visit to Vouni Panayia unveils the profound history and culture of Cyprus wine. The winery's commitment to excellence, innovation, and sustainability has culminated in the production of some of Cyprus's finest wines.
